National Museum of American History

"The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History dedicates its collections and scholarship to inspiring a broader understanding of our nation and its many peoples. We create opportunities for learning, stimulate imaginations, and present challenging ideas about our country’s past."

"The Museum collects and preserves more than 3 million artifacts—all true national treasures. We take care of everything from the original Star-Spangled Banner and Abraham Lincoln’s top hat to Dizzy Gillespie’s angled trumpet and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz.” Our collections form a fascinating mosaic of American life and comprise the greatest single collection of American history." My favorite museum in Washington. I used to spend every weekend there during my short time here in 1991. I am sure the renovations only add to the atmosphere. See the Star Spangled Banner and the First Ladies Inaugeral Dress collection. There are books in the stores for small children to adults. I would recommend a couple of days of touring this museum to see everything.

I used to work across the street from this museum, and on my lunch hour I would wander its halls. This is one of the wonderful things about the Smithsonian museums... they are free... you can bop in and look at a few exhibits during a free hour and not feel like you've wasted the admission fee if you don't spend all day. During a hot Washington summer, ducking into a cool museum, looking at not just dry boring history, but the new exhibits that keep appearing, gives a lift. I remember seeing Archie Bunker's chair and Fonzie's jacket!
