"Deliberately setting aside the controversies of the war, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the men and women who served when their Nation called upon them. The designer, Maya Lin, felt that 'the politics had eclipsed the veterans, their service and their lives.' She kept the design elegantly simple to 'allow everyone to respond and remember.'" The "black wall" is one of the most visited tourist sites in DC. And yet... it is a solemn site. A time for reflection. There are almost always veterans visiting, or family members, and they are part of the experience. At first the memorial was only the black wall, but later some statues were added. I think they are unnecessary, but they are also worth seeing.

The names of so many brave Americans engraved on "The Wall" may bring you to tears and make you realize that freedom isn't free.

this is honestly my favorite memorial in dc. it's simplicity makes it so beautiful. and it's placement next to the korean memorial, where the statues are located, are a wonderful compliment.

Highly recommend you spend some time here. It's a moving experience. I usually see some veterans here and I want to thank them for their service, but am afraid to intrude. So many names.....so many soldiers!

The Wall is a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives. There are names of my father's Soldiers and the name of the Soldier who worked so my father could be present for my birth.
